The Fractalize™ system is conceived to ensure the maximum possible energy efficiency and adheres to, and is optimized for, passive house design techniques, including but not limited to the following:

• Engendered airflow control. Because of Fractalize™ detailing, our buildings will achieve an estimated air-tightness of 0.2 ACH50 (Passive House limit 0.6 ACH50, existing buildings range from 3-10 ACH50)
• Climate-specific continuous insulation (R-value depends on climate and compactness of building)
• High-performance triple-pane windows. U-value and SHGC are climate dependent. We propose a U center of glass of 0.1 and a low SHGC of 0.3 - 0.5 depending on the orientation. A high-performance window manufacturer will join ULS to collaborate on the window fractals, including integration of the window frame directly into the fractal.
• Thermal bridge free construction, achieved by offsetting fractals structure between the interior and exterior layer. All connections between walls and floors are over-insulated by the exterior layer of the fractal. Wood is the main material minimizing thermal bridging, using low-conductivity materials.
• Use of a high-efficiency ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) (system efficiency > 90%). The ERV will be an integral part of the mechanical system. The mechanical system design specification includes a plug-in HVAC pot, located in the center of the building.
• Integration of passive heating strategies. The building and systems will be designed to take advantage of the sun for heating (about 70% of the heating needs to come from solar heat gains) by specifying different SHGC for various orientations.
• Integration of passive cooling strategies. Shading devices and lower SHGC on east and west will be integral to the fractalized design. The extreme air flow control of 0.2 ACH50 allows for a minimal cooling load and minimized mini split HVAC system.
• The home design is optimized for natural daylighting, reducing lighting energy and improving well-being of the occupant.
• The extremely minimal heating and cooling loads, due to the efficient home design and application of the fractalize system, allow for a minimized mini split heat pump system. An air to air heat pump will be used to benefit from the cost-effective nature of the system.
• The entire energy system of the home is optimized by specifying the efficiency of all electric appliances (for example a heat pump dryer, induction range) and LED lighting. The energy system will also integrate an occupant control system to further optimize the energy efficiency.
